Working with brass (Marzocco)

Postby heshca on Tue Nov 16, 2010 3:49 pm

In the process of taking apart the Marzocco I acquired via craigslist in preparation for a rebuild, I have put some superficial scratches/dents in the brass fittings. I am wondering, after I do the descaling, what is the best procedure for buffing these out?

Assuming that you are talking about interior fittings i.e. they don't have a lacquer clear coat & are solid brass, not brass plated.. then you can use a jeweler's rouge (fine abrasive paste) to buff out superficial scratches. Rub in a circular motion with a clean, soft cloth e.g. flannel or carefully with a rotary tool buffing wheel.

If they are interior parts, why spend the time buffing them? They will never be seen unless you plan on putting a lexan case on the machine. You know, that would be interesting to do, a see through espresso machine.

Lots of cafes have put plexiglass or glass cases on their machines.

I'd just leave the fittings alone. The pipes you can just scrub with scotchbrite pads and leave them at that - that gives a much better lasting finish than polished pipes which tarnish within days.
