Hi All,
Since my old barrel softener has seen better days I decided to update the softening system. According to my test kit the general hardness is 161ppm and the carbonate hardness is 100ppm. I think that converts to 9.39 grains and 5.83 grains respectively.
I was thinking about getting one of these softeners,

and placing it inline with my filter using a "T" fitting and a valve. This will allow me to fine tune how much softened water mixes with the tap water to obtain the perfect balance.
Anyone ever use these types of systems? How long do they last? I see the filters are based on softening capacity but not sure how that relates to my application. What is the ideal hardness that gives good flavor and won't scale my machine too much?
Lastly are there any tutorials on how to descale a T1. I haven't done it yet and probably should.
Thanks,
J.

Do a search for lots more.
Descaling the Elektra A3
This is probably the most thorough way to descale.
