Water level in sight glass increases when pressing brew button -- why?

Postby elektralove on Fri Jul 01, 2011 9:58 am

When depressing cafe button my elektra micro casa semiautomatica increases water level in sight glass and the water in the above tank decreases tons. The only way that I am able to decrease the water level in sight glass is to turn steamer knob and allow it to release steam until I see that the level is lower. In Oct I had taken to have new pressure stat installed. They said nothing was wrong with my machine. It has worked well until now. I cleaned it 3 wks ago and now this is happening. I love this machine. Any ideas?

If the passages to the grouphead are clogged or restricted
and the inlet solenoid 2 way valve is weak the water could be diverted to the boiler instead of the heating exchanger

OR ouch ouch the heating exchanger is cracked or has pin hole

Stefano is suggesting two possible causes:

  1. Solenoid valve that routes water from the pump to either (a) the brew head, or (b) the boiler isn't working correctly. The valve could be sticking due to scale or grit. Or the solenoid piston could be failing to return to its rest position due to a weakened spring.
  2. Heat exchanger has a pinhole in it, which allows water destined for the brew head to leak into the steam boiler. He said "ouch" because this scenario is very costly.
Since you recently hired someone to replace the pressurestat (a diagnosis that is far easier than the one we're discussing), I recommend going back to them for assistance.

Thank you for your stellar advice. However, I am unable to travel to NJ to have my machine repaired again. Given proximity and the fact that my machine was there for 3 wks and they said nothing else was wrong....
Does anyone know of repair people in New York City? I would appreciate all your assistance.
