Vibe pump preinfusion

Postby Ian_G on Tue Jun 21, 2011 3:14 pm

This is a question about what happens to the water as the vibe pump cranks up, and could probably apply to any vibe pump machine. As the pump pressure rises, is the water pre-infusing the puck, if not what is it doing?

The pump is working and only after a few seconds does the water start to flow. The pump has to be pumping something.

Like a bicycle pump, vibratory pumps use a one-way valve to build up pressure. This diagram makes it clear how it works:

Pressure builds fairly slowly while the vibe pump piston goes back and forth because of their relatively low flow rates. In contrast, rotary pumps have a far greater flow rate at espresso brew pressure range, so they fill the chamber and fully pressurize nearly instantaneously. Some marketing literature refers to the vibratory pump's naturally slower pressure ramp as preinfusion; to put a slightly finer point on it, I refer to it as progressive preinfusion to distinguish it from another preinfusion mechanism like the E61 expansion chamber.

However, when the vibe pump isn't operating, I believe that it will pass line pressure; when you aren't pulling a shot, the 3-way valve is closed, so there is no flow, but there is line pressure behind it. When you hit the brew switch, the 3-way valve opens and the pump is activated. The puck starts preinfusion at line pressure, ramping up to pump pressure.
( ignoring the time it takes for the water to fill the chamber)

That's true for a rotary pump because of the bypass valve, but not for a vibratory pump. For the nitty gritty details, see Pressure profiles, preinfusion and the forgiveness factor.

I guess that explains why my pump doesn't work...
