Used Vibiemme Junior with fitting leak

Postby rennix on Sat Nov 13, 2010 9:41 am

Just got a lightly used JR from 1st-line. Anyone know how to fix this? I tried tightening it but to no avail.

Should mention EricS is helping out, a work in progress.

Is it a flare or compression fitting? If you take fitting apart, you can probably discern why it's leaking. You may need to remove some scale or replace a damaged compression ring. If it is a scored flare, then the best solution would be to solder a new mushroom cap on the copper line, etc.

I have no idea what those are, but it's a flared end so I'm going with flare. My best guess at this point is that the boiler is hanging low and the angle is off. Still haven't gotten it right. I took it apart and it looks fine. It's supposed to be brand new so shifting is more likely.

A flare fitting is a metal to metal seal of two precision surfaces. The nut just holds the two sealing surfaces together. So being loose or misaligned are likely causes. It's still good practice to confirm that the surfaces are smooth and appear to be aligned before tightening.

Do not over tighten. Tighter is not always better, it can damage the fittings. Just finger tight, then no more than half a turn more with a wrench. I'd try an eighth to a quarter turn to start with, then a bit more if needed until it seals. Also try to narrow down where it is leaking.. is it possible that it is leaking from the solder seam to the extreme left? Or is definitely coming from somewhere around the retaining nut?

It looks misaligned to me. There is probably a groove in the mushroom from the original installation, and now that it is out of alignment, it'll leak where the groove no longer mates to the fitting.

I tried to over and over to get it to fit right, had EricS on the phone (thanks again) for a bit, and still no luck. Tightening the leaky end first should seal the leak but it did not. I could not detect any obvious dis-conformities in the piece either, but 1st-line should be sending a new pipe with fittings out soon! We shall see in the next few days :D

When the new pipe arrives it should fit square and true at both ends with the nuts not in place (that is, not threaded onto their fittings). The nuts should be to just hold the two surfaces together, NOT used to bring them together. If not, then the two parts to which this pipe connects are not aligned properly, or the pipe itself needs to be reformed a bit (bent) to fit properly. It may be just a matter of loosening the two parts (boiler and...?) and then installing the pipe, then tightening the mounts for the two parts.

I got a new pipe and fittings but it was not shaped to fit immediately. I screwed one end on and bent it on (wouldn't bend right otherwise) and it works like a charm. Though now I occasionally hear some weird sizzles in quick succession. I don't see any leakage from anything and have no idea what it is. It doesn't even do it consistently. Could have loosened something? I don't know. Maybe I'm paranoid.
