Tips on removing old paper boiler gasket

Postby jkoravos on Thu Jan 26, 2012 3:08 pm

I spent about 20 minutes chipping away at the old paper gasket on my boiler (I didn't even get to the half that came off with the boiler lid). Has anyone had this same issue and have some tips to make this a little easier. I really don't want to spend another half hour chiseling away at this gasket.

Try heating it with a hair dryer or heat gun in a well ventilated room. This should soften the old gasket & whatever adhesive they put it on with. If the boiler is out of the machine you can coat the gasket with paint remover which will soften & lift the gasket or just burn it off with a propane torch.

On my vintage machines, I used a razor-blade scraping tool - the kind that can be used to remove stickers from glass, etc. Must be VERY careful as this tool uses a very sharp blade, but it did work very well. I also like the idea of preheating the gasket. That should make the job that much easier. Main recommendation is to be patient, and take your time... and scrape away, not toward, you!

Thanks guys. I'll try heating it up. Maybe that will help.

oven cleaner judiciously applied with a brush. Automotive stores also have gasket remover.

The oven cleaner is a good idea. Automotive gasket remover is just paint stripper in a smaller & more expensive container. Any of these products may leave some ugly stains on brass/bronze.
