I've read on other sites that it's recommended to put your water softening cartridge before your water filter so that if any of the gel medium escapes the softening cartridge it'll be stopped before it hits your machine.

I'm not sure how real the risk is, but this is how I've got my water setup using a Watts Premier setup with a 10" water softening cartridge before the sediment filter.

Since I'm rockin' levers and water kettles, my softened water terminates at a faucet and is not plumbed into anything.

First I should have used a "series" head instead of the "parallel" one I bought; the QC71. This means the water flows through both filters at the same time instead of first through one then the other. With this setup I was told to use two of the same cartridges. I had my local water report and quoted the hardness (13-31 mg/L as CaCO3) to the rep and was told to use 6SO or 7SO cartridges. Putting this info with the other posts above from L.M. and Everpure I think I'll replace my MC2's with the 7SO's and keep observing the sight glass for "tan fluffy stuff".

Duke,

I use everpure set ups at home, and with machines I install, I have a few used set up from used machines that I have purchased. send me a PM if you need one. I come back and forth to the bay area almost every week.

these are a couple of types I use. I will have to look at your version. Is it not modifiable to allow it to be re plummed?

After talking to L.M. and Everpure and getting contradicting info I went with Everpure's advice. They told me the MC2 cartridges are not correct for espresso, they are more suited for soda machines and told me to try 7SO cartridges. I have these on their way to me and can report after some time using them. Everpure also told me I should have used a "series" filter head not the QC71 parallel head. With the series head you can use two different cartridges for more "detailed" filtering.

Kinda funny, I didn't mark the date of the last flush but it has stayed clear since. The stuff probalby knows I ordered new filters so it's hiding.

Eric; As to making changes in my filter setup it is hard-plumbed and not easy to change. There is a picture of it on the middle of page 156 of the "post a pic of your home setup" thread.
