Suggested Filter Setup for Plumbed in La Pavoni Espresso Machine

Postby nathanthepilot on Sun Sep 04, 2011 11:24 pm

Greetings fellow coffee lovers! I have searched the forum for more info on filtration, but the ones I saw were not specific in the order the filters should/could go. One guy had 6 or 7 filters, which was just overkill. I just need some simple advice on how to arrange my filters for a plumbed in single group La Pavoni hx machine. I purchased 3 10" filter housings with 3/8" openings on them. Along with those, I have an assortment of filters. Maybe someone can share their thoughts on the order these should be placed. I have room under my kitchen cart for 3, maybe 4 10" filter housings plus the drain container. I don't think I need to get crazy with it, but thought the order could go: GAC carbon filter, then the softener, then to the carbon block filter into the pump (I think I read a polishing filter should be after the softener). Does this sound about right? My water is moderately hard and chlorinated. Below is my filter order that was just placed, so any combination of the filters should work. Thanks for sharing!

3 x Pentek 158149 3/8" NPT Slim Line 10" White Housing

1 x Aqua Pure 10" Sediment Filter Cartridge - 5 Micron

1 x Hydronix 10" Carbon Block Water Filter - 10 Micron

1 x Hydronix 10" GAC Water Filter Cartridge

1 x Water Softening Filter 10"

I can't recall my source at the moment, but I recently installed a softener cartridge in line with a 3 cartridge Premier setup and understood the softener cartrridge should go before any other filters.

If the water is only "moderately hard," consider not softening at all. But test first!

I located the source of my information and wanted to pass it along:
(http://www.chriscoffee.com/faq#16d). Chris supplies an informative explanation as to why the carbon filter should never be place before the softening cartridge as it can have serious consequence for your equipment.
