Starbucks espresso machine historicals

Postby samster on Mon Aug 22, 2011 8:58 pm

Hi all. I'm teaching a business case on Starbucks this week and was curious if anyone knows what kind/brand of grinder and machine they used for espresso in the early days before they switched to auto (what brand do they use now?).

Long shot, but I'm guessing someone here might know.

Thanks in advance.

They used La Marzocco Linea machines. Not sure about the grinders.

Starbucks apparently now uses super-automatic machines made by thermoplan (Verismo). I believe they used to use La Marzocco Lineas and Mazzer grinders.

La Marzocco Lineas and Mazzer Super Jollys -- lots of us amateurs scored these machines after Starbucks got rid of them.

Mazzer Majors for the regular espresso and Super Jolly's for decaf. IIRC they used both Ditting 1204's and in some store Mahlkoenig VT6A's for drip coffee. Maybe Fetco's for drip?

How long has it been now? There was a guy on Craigslist the last couple of weeks traveling the west coast with a bunch of Super Jollys along with 3 Astoria Argenta Espresso machines. I haven't had a chance to call him, though.

I watch Craigslist and that "traveling salesman" pops all too often in far too many cities for my comfort. Caveat emptor

I actually spoke with him, and although it seems like a scam, i'm indifferent. After speaking with him, he will not ship, the units, and will only sell in person, and I think Cash only. He is supposed to be in the NYC area, in October with about 25 SJ's, though I already have one.
