I removed the pressure disk as well as the spring mechanism in the bottom of the portafilter. However, this left the shots running through a bunch of plastic on the bottom end of the portafilter, an idea that just sounds so gross I wasn't even going to taste it. Using a drill, I made a one inch diameter hole in the black plastic, allowing the espresso to flow from the brew basket, onto the metal bottom, and out of the hole, never touching the plastic once.

I call it a partially nude portafilter.

Tried the PF without pressurizing spring, definitely worth it. Thanks for the tip, makes you wonder why they ever bothered with the pressurized PF in the first place...

Because they were trying to accomodate the tens of thousands of users with an equal number of coffee grinders (or not) to produce a decent espresso. Lots of engineering man-hours (and thus $) went into those pressurized PF's.
