Smallest 2 Group?

Postby Fr. John on Sat Mar 28, 2009 4:50 pm

Just thinking today I'd love a two group. Probably can't afford it but just wondering if anyone knows the smallest footprint 2 group out there.

The two group Ponte Vecchio Lusso, if you don't mind a lever machine.

Compact commercial 2 groupers with built in pumps run around 24 inches (regular 2 groupers are around 30 inches). They use 220 Volts, around 3000 watts, and need to be plumbed in.

I was afraid of that.

Franke Coffee (formerly ESI) used to carry the Rio Compact 2 group and although they no longer stock that model I believe it's available from other vendors and can be ordered in a 110V version. You really need 220 for the commercial environment but with a 7 liter boiler at home your recovery time would be plenty fast enough on 110V. Needs to be plumbed in but you can always use a Flo-Jet pump from a five gallon jug of water and then run the drain line into a five gallon bucket.

Rio 2 Group Compact Specifications:
HEIGHT (NSF) 23"
WIDTH 20"
DEPTH 22"
CUP HEIGHT (BAYONET TO TRAY) 5 3/4"
SHIPPING WEIGHT 165 lbs.
VOLTAGE 110V or 220V
ELEMENT WATTAGE 2000W
AMPS RATING 19.4A
BOILER CAPACITY 7L

Well I'm already plumbed in and adding a 220 outlet is no big deal (we do it that work ourselves around here). I'm sure the price is prohibitive. With 5+ drinks to make every morning, and several more when we have visitors, a two group would make my job much easier I think.

Of course, another way to achieve similar output, possibly at lower cost is to get 2 one-group machines side by side. One can also achieve faster output by having extra baskets (or even extra PFs) to fill & tamp while a shot is extracting. This is assuming one has removed the PF springs for quick basket replacement.

BTW, though I love my Lusso 2-group, I realize that not everyone will appreciate its smaller than average shot volumes.

I bought a second Elektra Semi for when I need a second group. They are 900 watts a piece, so they can go side by side on one 20 amp circuit. The two together are also bit cheaper than most regular two groupers. If you already have a one group semi commercial, a second one, if necessary on a clean circuit, gets you a second group for company, and spare parts for regular use.
