Hi ,

I have a small leak between my rotary pump and the motor.I emailed a parts distributor and they suggest the bearings on the pump may be shot. The leak is small and I still get good pressure but am wondering if I should just replace it as I'm about to order some other parts.I'll add that the pump whines a lot, perhaps also pointing to the bearings.I'd be glad to record the pump if anybody cares to listen to it for analytical purposes. Can I put it on my website and post a link? Is this allowed or is it better- for me to email an mp3 ? Here's a pic:

Thanks once again

Just get another pump, especialy if it leaks and whines. They are relatively inexpensive...choose the cheapest between Procon and Fluidotech (Rotoflow)....I expect around 70-90 USD

Hi,

A procon pump is more like$150 these days-still worth it but just saying it like it is.So I pulled out the pump and there's a filter inside-it's a procon btw.I'm soaking it in acid now and then I'll see if it improves. Here'a a pickee

beautiful piece of brass i have to say!If it's broken I guess I'll have to start wearing it around my neck on a chain or something

wow $150, thats a lot, they are definitely a bit cheaper over here. The trade price for pumps of large commercial machines would shock you with how cheap they actually are. Even my Alex pump (Fluid-o-tech Rotoflow) in the UK only retails at $75

Did you check the price of a similar Fluid-o-tech pump, they can sometimes be a bit cheaper than the procons, but over here the reliability seem similar.

Maybe one of the "few" benefits of being in the European Common Market, there are not many others...

If the bearings are shot they can wobble on the spindle a bit, causes the seals to leak, especially if they are a bit worn, the worst thing is when they get bad and the pressure gauge starts to flick up and down when you are pulling a shot. Also be mindfull of the extra strain it could be putting on that usually quite expensive (presumably RPM) motor! I hope it all works out OK with the acid soak, but I fear that if it's "knackered" (technical term), it could leak even worse afterwards.

Hi,

Thanks for the tip on the less expensive pump-I'll check it out.I put it back together and the leak is better but still there so I guess it's in sub-knackered territory. It's still whining much-too bad I can't lube it.Pressure doesn't really waver but there's resistance and straining for sure and you're spot on (as youse say over dayre!) about possible damage to the motor.I ran the motor for a few secs when I had the pump off to make sure it twasn't that from whence the noise cometh.I'll check in on this thread when I decide what to do.Sorry about my bad humour(I was once Canadian and MUST apologize, at least for old time's sake) and the damn machine isn't hot yet and since I had about 12 espressos yesterday I have a serious caffeine hangover right now.

Yeah...i'd really recommend biting the bullet and changing it, if the price of your pumps is so much over there i'd bet the rpm motors come in at 400-500 bucks!

I luckily have a spare pump (cos they are so cheap) :P...

The only thing between the back of the pump and the motor is the impeller shaft, bearings and seals. If the bearings go you could burn up the motor or hose it down with water.

Hey. Any update on your pump leaking? I just noticed the same exact leak on my m21 cimbali. but my leak is much more pronouced...it streams out when the pump is activated from somewhere in between the pump and motor. i may try to clean the filter. so do I need a new pump, motor or both?

While these folks aren't so great, you could get a rotary pump in the neighborhood of $80 shipped (link). I have no relation to them other than I may want to get one just in case...

It would seem from some of the information in this thread, and my own personal poking around, that a pump with 50-60 gph (~200 lph) and a balanced bypass is what is common to most rotary specs. So a Procon, 112A060F11CB130 perhaps, or the 111A060F11CB130 (if you want the integral strainer). These numbers are explained on the Procon site (link). FWIW, the picture of a replacement rotary on Chris' site shows a 112A060F11CB130.
