Repairing a Steam Leak (Gaggia Evolution)

Postby bamboomer on Thu Apr 12, 2007 6:45 pm

I'm new to this forum and hoping this is the best place to post this. If not, please let me know so i can put it where it belongs. I just purchased (for a song!) a Gaggia Evolution machine that needs some work. After it warms up it has a steam leak from around the group head. I have a pdf of the machine, exploded view showing all of the parts. I'd like to determine what part(s) is needed and how to fix it. Can anyone recommend a good resource for learning how to fix this machine. I'd rather a DIY project than send it to someone and pay a lot of $$.

any help will be GREATLY appreciated!

thanks

Firstly, Welcome to HB forums, Bamboomer.

This is ONE source for parts: http://www.partsguru.com

What is likely the problem is a leaking check valve which is on the "other side" of the dispersion screen and is evidenced by a steam leak through the dispersion screen.

The dispersion screen screw threads into the check valve body. Does this agree with the pdf you have of the machine? You might try flushing some descaling solution through the machine and that, by itself MAY cure the leak. If not, then keep in mind that this little valve body is sometimes difficult to remove and requires a large stubby screwdriver probably with the blade fattened a little to give a nice tight fit in the brass body of this check valve.

Sorry to revive and old thread but I'm having this same issue. After over a week of email ping pong with gaggia UK they advised I replace the group gasket. This has not fixed the issue (and I wasn't convinced it would). How do I go about fixing this same problem? (I have descaled already)
