Recently bought a Linea. Need some electrical help.

Hi guys,

The missus and I recently got ourselves a used Linea for "dirt" cheap. A tad under 2000USD with todays rate.
Anyhow... This is a 220V three phase european machine, and I need it to run on a 220V single phase connection.

Do any of you know how to rewire the machine to run of a normal household 220V? 20 amps, by the way.
My basic electronic knowledge tells me that this shouldn't be to complicated, but the internet (yes I have looked :) ) doesn't give me any good answers.

The machine in question is a:
Linea 2gr AV
Built in 02/02.
Standard european edition
3600W

And there will be some pictures when I get it up to shape :D

Thanks,
Martian

You need a 3 phase frequency converter. A quick google search gives this motor drive converter for a bit over $200. You could probably find one cheaper on ebay just make sure it is rated for at least 3600VA, 4kVA would give you a bit of overhead.

I am no electrical engineer so someone else may want to confirm that.

Normally when machine are wired for Europe and they arrive in the US
the three phases ( hot wires) black brown and grey
gets' connected together
the blue is the neutral ( which the the US becomes the other hot leg)
and the yellow green the ground

Thanks Dave & Stefano,

Stefano, you are absolutely correct.
We had my fiance's machine technician come over yesterday to estimate the "damage". (she manages a couple of espresso bars here in Oslo)

He rewired the socket, and it seems to do the trick.
We got the Linea up and running, for test purposes, and it actually seems quite ok.
Kind of surprised it heated up as fast as it did running on a single phase.
A couple of minor leaks but nothing to complicated.
O-ring on top of the right group head, and the solenoid plungers are broken/rotted.
And one of the steam valves are in quite bad shape.
Not a problem since we haven't planned any latte art competitions in the near future, and can manage with just one functioning steam arm.

Now I have to remove the dust, grit and soot build up from the last 6-7 years.
Should be fun...

A used Linea are hard to come by here in Norway, and when they do (maybe once a year) they rarely go for under 40 000NOK, which is about 6000USD, so we are quite pleased with our find.

Thanks again,

Martin
