I am getting a little off topic but just so excited about this stuff I could not resist. Here is paper on the delta sigma ADC chip that can be used for your RTD. I have not yet tried it but it seems to give really great resolution over the entire range. This is the modern approach that reduces the need for preci$ion resistors:

Awesome!! Thanks Bill! :D

Im taking my machine in to work tonight to test it before I start modifying things. Ive only added the PID as the original thermostat was damaged when it was removed.

Had a couple of leaks, so am going over everything with a fine tooth comb (so to speak)

Ive been scouring over exploded views of the group heads trying to figure out how the banjo tube seals against the inside of the group head (as this is where my main leak was)

I cant see in the drawing any kind of seal there.... :?

Am I missing something??

The typical method of sealing a banjo fitting is with soft copper washers on both sides of the banjo.

Ross,
Not sure which end you are refering to but, at the top of the group head there is a cylindrical piece on the tube (banjo). This part is chamfered on both sides allowing it to be captured by two surfaces and compressing together to make the seal. On the other end is a threaded "stud" (1/4 BSPP threads). This is inserted through the group from inside to outside, the seal is made by crushing the "stud" to the inside of the group. There is no sealing material other that the metal on metal seal. I presume this is the one you are talking about. I can make a better exploded view if needed.

That is indeed the one Bill.
If you could email me one of the exploded views, that would be awesome
Thanks! :D

Thanks for those pics Bill.

So I have learned that I cannot do the Piero cap mod as the machines both have the bolt on groups. Pieros are only available for welded groups.
Espresso parts have welded group boilers for $2460, so thats not an option.

However I found on a German espresso forum, a guy who has modified his existing group caps to accept the 90 degree 3 way solenoid & modified his banjo tube as well.

Since there are 3 different coils rated at 200V, 220V & 240V, I could possibly use the Lineas 18V solenoid wires to switch a SSR.

If someone has a Linea with welded groups & Piero caps, can they tell me if what the voltage of their coils are pls!

Did you see this?

The coils on the Espressoparts set are 220V 8W.

Good luck!

Ross,
The coils come in a few sizes, mostly you see the 220V in the USA. There are also 110V (GS3), 200V(Japan), 230V (most of Europe).

I can't complain; Bill has been very generous to me in the past with parts too.

So, Ive just moved to a bigger place (with a back yard for the dogs), so still trying to sort out boxes of stuff.
Hopefully will be sorted in the next few days & be able to get some work done!

While Im waiting on the Piero caps to arrive, I have torn down the 2nd machine, cleaned all the hydraulics and am removing a bit of rust from the steel frame. I have also removed rust from the black low base, have just finished priming it & am ready to repaint it.
Heres a pic of the frame after cleaning & the low base after priming.

Havent descaled the boilers yet, hopefully tomorrow....

Have started painting the low base with black gloss paint & also cleaned one of the group heads today.
Heres a before & after shot...

Hi Ross, what did you use to clean the groupheads? I have tried several blasts with stronger and stronger citric acid, and I still can't get rid of all the crud in the head.

I'm actually curious as to the reason for painting the groups internally?

Ha! That would make more sense - thought the one on the left was painted black and the one on the right was just cleaned and he was showing the difference. Was going WTF as to why one would paint inside the group!
