Rancilio TECNA DE rebuild

Postby tg4360 on Fri May 30, 2008 1:08 pm

Hey folks,

I'm the new guy here and and I'm rebuilding a machine for a friend of mine who's opened a book store/coffee bar in my town. The forum has been a great resource for the rebuild so I thought I'd post some pictures as i go along.

Here's what I've got so far as I'm taking apart this much abused unit:

The heating element has leaked slightly:

The flow meter above the right group head. Sorry I didn't think to get pictures of the brew heads themselves. there was some type of fire casualty on the right side of the machine as you will see later.

Top of the boiler as I started taking parts off. You can just see the marks from whatever happened in the middle:

more coming up.....

Here's the right side of the machine from the front.

It looks like fire damage but there is only discoloring. everything seemed to work when I had it fired up before I started taking it apart. The only thing I'm unsure of is the auto fill.

Here's the left side. the bottom of the left group head parker valve is rusty and that outlet fell off as soon as I took the front cover plate off.

And here..... yuk. The inside of the boiler was packed with scale and the heating elements were also. I've since soaked in CLR and de-scaled the elements pretty well.

Here's the typical (from what I've seen of the other pictures here) boiler fill level line:

The inside of the boiler cover AFTER some cleaning... it's getting cleaner.....

The injection tubes. Replacements on order:

And last for now.... the bare frame:

I'll take better pictures from now on if everyone is interested in the progress.

Please post lots of pictures. Love watching a restore. In addition the pictures you take will allow you at a later time to remember where things go. This has saved me countless questions on my Elektra rebuild. I took pictures of EVERY part before I disassembled it. Does the red wire go on the left or the right..... so nice to be able to look at a picture. Of course once you clean it up the wires go from gooey brown to a different color.

That's the reason I actually started the picture taking is documentation for assembly.

Then I found this place and I enjoyed seeing the other restorations so I figured I'd give back because I've learned so much from here.

Now I have to scrub that nasty frame and paint it. I have a friend that does powder coat for his company so I might ask about having the frame run through the next time he does black or gray.

Speaking of rebuilding, I forget to ask one of my questions....

This unit is missing the drip tray and the cup stand that goes over it and these seem to be unobtainium from any parts suppliers.

If anyone knows of a donor machine or someone who might have such parts I'd appreciate getting connected with them.

Outside of that, we are thinking of getting a sheet metal mechanic to bend us up something to fit.

It's been tough getting the time to get to work on this but I've cleaned scraped sanded and now primed the frame.

Here it is all primed and awaiting a coat of paint:

I've at this point given it a first coat of paint that is just a bit lighter shade of gray than the slate that it was.

The Owner didn't care that it's frame is not the same color.

I just got parts in for assembly: Injection tubes, gaskets and copper washers. As soon as i get a second coat of color on it I'll start reinstalling the wiring and go from there.

I found out today that she'd also got a grinder in the deal so she's supposed to bring that to me for a check out.

Should be fun when I get things together.

I needed parts for my (I admit, newer) Epoca, so I emailed Rancilio direct. They put me onto the UK official distributor of Rancilio parts, who stocked all the items I needed.

I emailed direct from the rancilio website and got a reply within a couple of days. Very helpful.

I hate to say that I've tried filling out a form on the Rancilio site and got no response.

Perhaps I'll give it another try....
