Quickmill Vetrano Drip Tray Vibration? - Page 4

Postby Illyfex on Sun Mar 07, 2010 9:32 am

Got mine yesterday, installed 'em and the difference is exactly what is shown in the video -- a buzzing loud machine before and a quiet humming machine afterwards. Amazing - thanks to Chris' team for jumping on this problem and being so helpful!

A few notes on the installation...

1) As indicated by Chris, you really need an INSANELY LONG philips head screwdriver to tighten the outer front mount. I was able to get at it with just a regular VERY long screwdriver (at a bad angle, though) by removing the GICAR box (one screw).

2) The video shows Chris pre-tightening the inner front mount, but inserting the first screw into the outer one. Not sure if that was by design or a result of video editing. If I had known that it would be trouble tightening the mounts from the top afterwards, I would have made a cardboard template of the hole patterns in the bottom case and pre-tightened 3 of the 4.

3) Keep a rag over the pump openings when you tilt the machine. I had a few drops spill out and it was enough to get my GFI outlet to trip (even with the machine off) until I could dry up the bottom shell with some air.

4) Don't forget to turn your water back on before running the pump!

Also, on this question...

...I bet if you remove one of the mount screws from below you could tell. The bad ones are silver and have blocked holes (see 6:06 in the video) and the good ones are brass-like and don't have blocked holes. It amazing how the bad ones transfer that vibration throughout the machine and the good ones don't. They appear to be identical except for the closed holes (maybe that design kept the screws from fully seating). Both have the top and bottom nuts separated by column of rubber. Strange, but anyhow, the machine is blissfully quiet now. Chris, thanks again!

I just purchased one of the last of the original Vetrano Rotary's (prior to the overhaul of the outer casing). I immediately found that it was very noisy. Buzzing and rattling. I thought it was the motor mounts after reading this string however after checking into it by opening up the case and grabbing the motor and attempting to move it... I found that it clearly had the "flex" that would be associated with the correct motor mounts. The noise was simply coming from the large stainless steel panels (sides and top) that act like sounding boards as they were not engineered to dampen any vibrations. The top panels were buzzing and the drip tray / backsplash vibrated as it was in contact with the side panels.

Long story short I reinforced the heck out of all the panels and the underside of the drip tray with Dynamat after reading about it in this thread. Then I took the drip tray out to my garage and set the grinder to the backsplash to remove some of it so that it no longer could come into contact with the side panels of the case. The machine is finally operating quietly as it should be. Thanks for the tip on the Dynamat! Other than the loose manufacturing specs on the housing I love the machine!

BTW Chris' Coffee Service was great with me as I worked through my troubleshooting process.

I can't tell by simply grabbing the motor and moving it. The only way is to look at the mounts. It is a night and day difference with the correct motor mounts watch the video. In addition you have to look at all four we found cases where two were the bad ones and two were the good ones. They ALL have to be the good ones.

Thanks Chris, I will open it up and check all of the mounts. The machine is quiet now but it can't hurt to check them out completely. It's just that when I grab the motor I can tell that all mounts are flexing as I attempt to move the motor. Never the less I'll crack it open and pull them all. I'm not afraid of working on this puppy at this point - it is built like a tank! :D

There really isn't much difference in the feel but there is a HUGE difference in how it transfers vibration. Well worth changing if you have some of the bad ones on your machine. The manufacturer never told Quick Mill and they were not aware until I found it and brought it to their attention. On some machines they were all new mounts and on some it would be just one or two. Anyway night and day difference.
