Quickmill Vetrano Drip Tray Vibration? - Page 3

Postby chris on Sat Feb 27, 2010 12:41 pm

Darly before I even got your email I got one from Dan of Home-Barista pointing me to a thread about noisy Vetrano machine. I went back to my service department and we started pulling machine out of the box and by the third one I found what I was looking for, a noisy one. I took the shell off and first thing I looked at were the motor mounts. They looked the same as the ones I had in inventory as spare parts on the outside but I still suspected them. So I disconnected the fittings to the pump and then undid the screws on the bottom holding the motor mount and pulled the complete motor and pump assemble out of the machine. I could see right away the motor mounts were slightly different. The ones that we spec'd and I had in my spare parts bin looked more like brass on the end and the end was hollow where the screw went in. The ones that were on the motor mount looked like they were solid and had no hole in the middle and they were made of what looked like aluminum. I changed the motor mounts and put the assembly back into the machine and put it all back together plugged it in and bingo purred like a kitten not a bit of vibration.
I suspect the manufacturer that Quick Mill gets them from made the change and never told them. Quick Mill more than likely just added the motor mounts to their inventory of parts and mixed them. That is why I suspect some are noisy and some are not. We have already sent images to Quick Mill of the two different mounts and let them know what we need in order to fix all the ones we have in stock as well as take care of any that may be in the field like yours. We first need to make a video that clearly shows before and after to help Quick Mill get their point across to the manufacturer so they don't try and blow them off as being picky.
I am going to do a video on how to change the motor mounts so that any of our customers that may have noisy machine can watch it and decide if it is something they want to do themselves. The other reason I am going to make a video is because there is a specific sequence to doing the job. If done in the proper sequence it is not difficult however if the sequence is not followed you can feel like you six hands to put it back together.
I am making the video this week possible as early as Monday or Tuesday. I am waiting to hear from Quick Mill the video of before and after is the first one I have to do so we can get he arts we need. Thank for bringing this to my attention the Vetrano has always be an extremely quite machine and I promise you that the one you have will also be very quiet. If you have any question please feel free to call me or email me.

Thank you for your business and your patience.

Amen to that! I researched solidly for about 3 months before buying my Vetrano -- all of that research led me to the conclusion that, for espresso machines, it's better to buy the vendor, not the machine. I knew that Chris was the right vendor before I settled on the Vetrano as the right machine.

Now, back to my experiment. I took the shell off and the machine is whisper quiet without it, BUT...there is still that vibration that will cause an espresso cup to dance away from the portafilter. No other signs of anything touching. I put some thin rubber strips between the shell and the frame and got it back together. It's quieter without the frame/shell buzzing, but the drip tray and cup warmer seem to buzz more -- maybe that vibration is getting passed through to other parts now.

Chris, is there a way to tell what mounts we have (old or new) without tearing things down? Doesn't sound like it from your description. I can live with the vibration for now, but would sure like to hear about those other mounts!

I am going to shoot a video and post it on Vimeo and link to it here on Home-Barista. The video will include audio of before and after. It will also include close up video of the the two different motor mounts. As far as your machines goes there is no question in my mind that yours has the incorrect mounts. Changing them is not that difficult, there are no hard steps it is just a matter of following the steps I will lay out in the exact order I show them. If someone doesn't follow my instructions they can still do it but it will be more difficult in fact can be frustrating. I am going to try and get the Video done tomorrow.

Chris, nice video. Is there a way to tell which mounts one has without removing things?

No I am afraid not. It is not that difficult to remove one of the mounts just to check. All you need to do is take the outer shell off, you don't need to undo any of the water lines or the capillary tube to the pump pressure gauge.

Illyfex,

I am in the same boat. Just email their service department and they will send you out new mounts when they arrive from Quick Mill, sometime next week. I am just glad we have this issue resolved. I was beginning to second guess my decision to get a Vetrano. I can't wait to have the quiet machine in the video!

My new mounts arrived today and the install went smoothly. The difference is night and day. It now purrs like it's designed too. Thanks Chris for your excellent customer service.
