Pump recommendation for Maximatic restoration

Postby JD. on Fri Mar 18, 2011 3:17 am

hi guys - just wondering what the best pump would be for a Maximatic/Pasquini L machine.

Would a Fluid0Tech be worth the extra money over the Ulka 48watt?

Also, do you think it's necessary to insulate the boiler on a maximatic? I won't be keeping it on all day as i'm at work.

thanks again

There have been some recent discussions regarding the FOT vs. Ulka pumps. It appears to have settled into 2 camps, the first being that regardless of whichever pump is used, an OPV is needed to tame the machine, and the second being that an OPV may be useful _only_ if you're using the Ulka pump.

I have a 1990 Maxi with the original FOT pump, no OPV and it puts out some damn fine shots. Given what I've read on HB (and that this machine has been running over 20 years on the same pump!), I'd say to go for the FOT pump. The short-term cost difference is outweighed by the long-term durability and the idea that the FOT pump wouldn't necessarily need an OPV.

For comparison, EspressoParts (here in US) sells the 120v Ulka for $63.85 and the 110v FOT for $97.90. In my opinion, the price difference is small enough to warrant purchasing the FOT.

The FOT is rated for commercial duty and the Ulka is not. Ulka pumps generally need to be replaced within five years, while FOT pumps do not. For a machine like the Maximatic, the FOT is probably a better fit.

I'm not sure an OPV is required for either pump; since the type of group design used in the Maxi is similar to that in the Elektra Semi or Bezzeras, and those are not picky about pump pressure. If there is room, it's not a big deal to add an OPV. The noise level will picks up a good deal, and if there is no change in taste, you may decide to take it back out again.

thanks for your advice. it looks like the FOT can be converted to 240v by changing the coil. so hopefully i can just carry on using the same pump. if not then i'll buy a complete 240v fot pump

cheers
