Problem w/ Silvia - water & steam, but no extraction :(

Postby sefa on Sat May 09, 2009 10:01 pm

Hi,

Have had my silvia for a few days now with few problems, pulled several standard shots with it, nothing out of the ordinary. However, recently and very suddenly it has started having problems with extraction - I literally, made one good shot, then 30 minutes later when I was making another, the extraction rate went down to next to nothing.

The shot dribbles out very slowly (if at all), and only after ~10 seconds or so. Even when running for up to a minute, I only end up with a very small amount. The steam wand seems fine - it seems to produce hot/flowing water and steam adequately, without delay.

Tried doing a thermometer reset - no luck. Also tried the coffee+water buttons 4-cup flush.

Perhaps this is a portafilter issue? Or something to do with pressure? The gasket?

Two things that may be relevant: its a 9-month old second hand machine, so may not have been descaled recently (but surely this wouldnt affect the extraction to this degree?). Also, I found a thin metallic ring with 3 flat edges amongst the packaging. It looks like it may fit in the portafilter or gasket - any ideas?

I've done a lot of research around the forum for similar problems, but haven't found anything so far, any help would be greatly appreciated.

What happens if you have no coffee in the filter? Does water flow then? Maybe you are simply choking the machine. Try coarsening up the grind.

Wow, just wow. Cant believe I didnt think of that.

Although it all makes sense - I recently changed the burrs on my grinder, when reassembling things I must have overtightened it far.

Thanks again. Will hopefully be making more productive contributions to the forum in future :)
