Portafilter came off during shot

Postby mhoy on Fri Jul 11, 2008 3:11 pm

Elektra T1, doing what I've been normally doing for the last week.
Fill portafilter basket with coffee, leveled to rim, tamped.
Flush to cool, until it stops boiling, locked in portafilter, pressed auto dose.

Usually I see the portafilter move 1/8" while it locks in. This time it slowly kept moving. I couldn't decide if I should grab the handle or step back, while I decided, it came off and well you know the rest. After cleaning up the mess I pulled another shot and really locked the sucker in place.

Today, this was about to happen again today, except I grabbed the handle and held it from moving.

The only thing I can think of is that I lubed up the gasket before I put it in and perhaps this is allowing it to slide.

Any other ideas?

I think you've hit the nail on the head. The gasket is there to provide a tight seal. By lubricating it, it has affected its ability to "grab" the PF.

Sorry for laughing at this hilarity... Wow. That seems extremely dangerous. Better take that lube off.

That's what I get for reading about putting some lube on the gasket so it's easier to remove in the future. Upon hearing something crashing around in the kitchen, my wife called from the other room and asked if I was alright. The trouble I go through for an espresso... just glad the kids were not standing around.

I think the lube is just supposed to go on the BACK of the gasket... ;)

I think it migrated under use. All was fine for the first week. Then all hell/'coffee grounds' broke loose, so to speak.
