That Simple Green is really toxic (one of the unfriendly chemicals in it is 2-butoxyethanol). You might wanna consider another cleaner, drgary.

Thanks for the heads up Cher. I'll try something else.

1-0-0 (health/flamability/reactivity)

<5% 2-Butoxyethanol

Other chemicals in Simple Green:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetrasodium_pyrophosphate
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trisodium_citrate

I wouldn't call it *REALLY* toxic.
I'd call it mildly toxic.

Research. research. research.

Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about Simple Green if it is well washed off - you wouldn't want to drink it.

At least it's a good thing I washed out the personal lubricant. Tasting that in my drink would confuse the senses. :)

Data was put out by Simple Green.
In any case, there's plenty of alternatives.

OK. Simple Green is a little bad, it's very bad. Bad, bad, bad! I'll find something to clean it up and whatever it is, even if it's Ivory soap, I'll wash it out of there so I don't drink it. I mean look at that machine in my profile on the right. Someone can probably make good coffee with it but can you imagine what it takes to clean the limescale out of that thing?

Wow, good to know. I had read that it was specifically developed for cleaning commercial coffee equipment. And I always used it diluted and well rinsed. I don't think Simple Green will make me grow green hair. But if it's a big concern, even after diluting and properly rinsing, then skip it all together and use something else.

As we're off into this topic of pure cleansers, I think a reminder from movie history is in order.

And with Peter Sellers no less.
"Foreign substances introduced into precious bodily fluids" sounds like a trip to Charbux or the piggy lattes they offer in town here...lol.
That was priceless.

The look on Peter Sellers' face in that clip is what defined this:

Returning to restoration, my next step is to follow Doug's suggestion about cleaning the outside of that boiler and doing it amateur style. I think I'll try some very fine steel wool.

I've also taken to heart this warning by Tiep, which I would have missed and would now have a boiler whose outside looks like brass instead of chrome:
Cafedenda wrote:If you take it out in order to dip the whole HX portion in citric acid, you will lose the chrome and the HX brass block will change color (I know you already know this). I would do the descale with everything in place since descaling is real easy on this machine.
