Old baby gaggia portafilter size

Postby robbbby on Sun Apr 24, 2011 5:33 pm

My dad has a really old baby gaggia and I want to buy him a nice tamper since i'm ordering some parts for myself.

I'm just wondering what size tamper I should buy? Does anyone know what size portafilter came on these machines? His machine looks like this..

The old baby gaggia porta-filters are different as I remember than the standard 58mm gaggia porta-filter assembly. But that is irrelevant really b/c you need to match the tamper to the dimensions of the basket you are using, especially since the basket could be one not necessarily made to fit that handle. I would measure the dimensions of the basket, taking into account the ridge on the inside, if there is one, and find a tamper that matches the exact dimensions. Reg barber and a few other companies provide custom tampers fit to match your basket and directions on how to best measure.
