Nuova Simonelli Oscar overheating problems

Postby nuovaoscar on Tue Feb 15, 2011 10:57 am

I am fairly new to the espresso world but currently I have an older Nuova Simonelli Oscar with an old CEME pstat. Everything seems to work on the machine but when it starts to overheat it doesnt stop heating. I don't really know how else to put this, but I have posted a video of my machine showing the issue here

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks

it's probably your pstat that is broken or it is the pstat and the safety valve..

I thought the pstat may have failed. I have already replaced the safety valve after reading other threads on this problem. Should I switch to a caprini or would it be worth it to mod to a sirai?

Sirai is unnecessarily large and expensive ...

It's NOT NECESSARILY the problem. The search engine on this site is well worth it:

Oscar Boiler Pressure

That existing CEME pstat MAY control a relay internal to your Gicar control box which itself has grown tired. If you modify your profile to indicate your city & state, you may get lucky as to a local repair facility or repair person that someone can recommend.

Thanks for the tip. I posted my location on my profile. How much does service charges generally run? Although good espresso is one of my loves, college still says otherwise :(

I would THINK that typical espresso machine service charges are 50-75/hr. But, if you check this post:
Power for PID controller for temperature display? and send a PM to Dana Leighton (he's in AR also), he might be able to help.

When I previously said that the pstat is "NOT NECESSARILY the problem", that, of course, is true. It may also turn out that IT IS the problem and that is a $50 + 1 hour fix.

Thanks for the reply. I met up with Dana a couple months after the original post and he helped me tremendously. He ended up replacing the pressurestat, but after finding that a new pressurestat didn't change the overheating he checked the wires leading to the pressurestat which happened to be fused. After some simple rewiring, it worked great and hasn't given me any problems since.
