New La Marzocco GS3 MP in the house

Postby FlyingShot on Fri Sep 17, 2010 8:20 pm

My GS3 was delivered and installed today. It is #1132, straight from Italy. I'm a little overwhelmed with the newness of it. The drip tray cover is different from any I've seen pictures of - I will post pics soon.

Hi Ken,

I saw your recent post about fittings, but didn't get around to answering mostly because I don't think this is the sort of thing you can really plan for in advance, unless you live somewhere so remote that you don't have a semi-decent hardware store nearby. In that case you'd have to buy 3 fittings just to get the one you really need, and toss the rest.

I "planned ahead" before my first GS/3 arrived, and ended up with the wrong fittings based upon what I had been told. In the end I drove 12 miles to the only semi-local hardware store that has a decent selection of brass fittings, and in a few minutes found what I needed. I really needed to have the braided SS hose in hand in order to choose the right fitting.

Plumbing fittings are very confusing, since there are several types with the same quoted sizes. 95% of the people you talk to don't know the difference between these types, even if they think they do. This includes most people who work in the plumbing departments of hardware stores. In the end it is best to simply have the necessary part in hand and to go, physically, somewhere that has a good selection of fittings, and to get what you need personally.

Good luck. Hope you like the machine.

Ken
I'll say they're confusing - its a jungle! I had already installed a braided drain hose ready for the machine. When the tech brought the machine he said the 1/4" inside diameter would be risky for clogging. So, off to Home Depot to buy a larger hose and new fittings - big challenge is to find a reducer to connect the end of the drain hose to the smaller hose that wends its way down to the utility room drain in the basement. It must be a metric size, as a 3/4" barbed fitting is tight. I wish we could complete this 40 year transition to metric and be done with it. Anyhow, no panic, as at least the water supply is attached and the drip pan is plenty big.

Follow-on discussion split to Metric vs. US measurements.
