Need some La Marzocco Linea PID mod help

Postby mitch236 on Sat Aug 07, 2010 5:07 pm

I installed the Fuji PID modification system sold by espressoparts. The wiring instructions are not very helpful but I eventually got everything running but I think my brew boiler isn't getting 220v because the front lamp is dim and it's taking forever for it to warm up. I have a single group with full auto. When I removed my old thermo there were two connections. One coming from the grouphead/heater had two wires; a white and a red. The other connection had one white wire coming from the wiring block on the side of the machine. I connected the red and white combo to the relay block on connection #2. I connected the other white wire to relay block connection #1. The rest of the wiring is very straightforward. These three wires are the only connections not really clearly outlined. After all the connections were made I found that I needed to ground the #2 relay block connection to get the boiler to even come on so I'm fairly certain there is a problem somewhere.

Has anyone else done this mod and do you have advice or pictures? I can't call espressoparts until Monday!

Thanks!

I don't know that particular controller, but I assume you are using the PID to drive a solid state relay. This will have a pair of high voltage switched contacts. (the output side of the SSR) Take the 2 wires that were connected to the thermostat switch roughly in the middle of the brew boiler and connect them to the outpur SSR terminals. You shouldn't have to interfere with anything else. All you're wanting to do is replace the mechanical thermostat switch with the electronic PID/SSR in terms of current path to the boiler element. This will also mean that your thermal cutout switch (on top of the grouphead or strapped to the brew boiler) is still inline to act as a safety backup.

Nick, you are absolutely correct and that's exactly how it is wired. The reason I believe I have to ground it may be that the stock thermocontroller may have grounded that lead by virtue of the leads being connected directly to the boiler mounted thermocontroller. Now they are connected to the relay. BTW as a clarification about the two leads to the #2 relay block is that the red wire goes to the boiler ON lamp. The white wire goes to the heating element. The white wire going to #1 relay block coming from the strip at the side of the machine must be the hot lead to power up the system.

The PID controller comes on and shows the temps. I can't however change the brew temp and it won't turn off the boiler so it just keeps on heating. In other words, the relay isn't realy working.

I'm certain it has something to do with the grounding issue. Tomorrow, I will check the hot lead for voltage. I assume it is supposed to be 220v.

Thanks for the input!!

I found that I needed to ground the #2 relay block connection . . .

That is a MISTAKE. None of these connections get grounded. The control side of the SSR needs to be connected with the proper polarity - did you check this?

It's working. I removed the ground wire which was basically bypassing the relay. Apparently they ship the device with a brew temp setting of 32f!

I can't wait to call espressoparts and complain about the documentation they provide. It is sorely lacking in information. Not only that, my unit doesn't have half of the parameters that they say to set in the instructions they do send meaning the unit has been changed since they wrote the instructions so they are outdated. I could write a better set of instructions! Well, maybe not but at least I could get you wired correctly and running.

Thanks to all that responded. I'm off to have my morning coffee!!!!

I have one question now that it's running. The brew light is continuously flickering. I assume this is normal?

Hello Eric,

i got a problem with the mount of the Linea Pid Kit. The same you have. Can you please tell me how the wiring is done correctly? I don't check the use of all the cables in this kit. Have you any pic of mounting?
Thank you for help.

I do not own a Linea but if you send me an email at erics at erols dot com , I may be able to help with the wiring.
