Need E-61 type brewhead clarification

Postby DolceVitaBaby on Sat Feb 20, 2010 5:14 pm

My understanding is that Faema invented this in ....1961 with the pre-infusion chamber lever machine with HX and pump dosing. Ok, however I hear references to E-61 in almost all kind of machines with all kinds of group heads. E-61 groups, E-61 gaskets, it's getting me confused. What do we call current volumetric automatic brewhead technology with electric lucifer valves? Post E-61? Non-E61? Clarification of this would be excellent.

I'm not aware of an accepted nomenclature for E61 groupheads without preinfusion expansion chamber (left):

Many vendors [implicitly] argue that a gicleur (restriction) valve and vibratory pump comprise progressive preinfusion versus the patented E61 preinfusion mechanism. While it is possible to measure the difference with precise instruments, I have never noted an in-cup difference.

I don't understand your question, please elaborate.

PS: It's an academic point, but most consider the iconic "saucer" grouphead and the E61 synonymous. However, the E61 patent claims call out the valve action/expansion chamber automation of preinfusion as the key novelty, not the grouphead itself. This forum's FAQs and Favorites has several other threads that elaborate on this and other points under the E61 subheading.
