My new Quickmill Silvano has wet pucks - Page 2

Postby innermusic on Mon May 02, 2011 5:23 pm

I know the puck has nothing to do with the beverage, but I would like to know that the part I paid for in this machine (the solenoid) is actually functional. Pucks are so wet they don't even come out when PF is whacked.

Is there an audible sound when solenoid kicks in?

Evidently you have never experienced the infamous "portafilter sneeze"? Here's an easy test: Pull a shot, turn off the pump, wait three seconds, and quickly remove the portafilter. If your crotch doesn't get sprayed with steaming hot coffee grounds, the three-way solenoid is working.

What happens when you backflush? I too would not be really happy with a puck so wet one cannot knock the puck out cleanly.

When I backflush, there is an audible sound at the end when I turn off the pump. But no such sound at the end of pulling a shot.

When you backflush, how much water is left in the PF when you remove it?

I have the same problem. Pretty soggy pucks, not so easy to knock em out and keep it in one piece, my old machine didn't Saeco Via Veneto (no 3way valve) sometimes had that but mostly it would be really nice and dry

When using the backflush disk there is a nice pool left in it after removing it (with like an ounce or so of water left). Is that normal?
It makes a bit of a sucking flushing noise when using the backflush disk when I stop the pump.

Don't discount the wet puck too fast. The most important thing of course is "does the coffee taste good". I had a case with a La Marzocco machine where a customer started to complaining of wet pucks. Turned out to be a clogged portafilter spout. When I hear this complaint I always test with a bottomless portafilter to rule out any blockage issue.

Probably not your issue since the machine is new. Just thought I would throw it out there.
