My beloved Oscar Nuova Simonelli stopped working

Postby robin2 on Tue Feb 01, 2011 8:23 pm

I have an Oscar....that stopped working a few weeks ago. I had it on, ready to go, I might have had it on for a while, and when I went to use it the on light was off. When I depress the brew button, the motor goes on, but no water comes out of the grouphead, some water does drip through the bottom two plastic pipes that drip into the tray. I think the tank may be out of water, but I can't get it to fill. Anybody have any suggestions?

Hi Robin and welcome!

I have a couple questions before making any major suggestions. When you say you think the tank is out of water, do you perhaps mean the boiler? To make sure water is flowing from the tank, remove from the Oscar, fill and press your finger into the bottom of the tank where the needle valve is located. If water comes out, that tank is okay.

Have you attempted to remove your group head shower screen and dispersion block to check for any blockages? Once removed, press the coffee delivery switch to see if water comes out now. Other than the water tank, that would be the other first step I would take before doing anything major.

Hi Joshua,

Yes.....I mean the boiler.....I am going to remove the group head shower screen and dispersion block to check for any blockages......what is the dispersion block? And, if there is a blockage, why would this affect the lights not going on....also, why won't the machine at least heat up when I turn it on? Thank-you so much for your response.

Hmmm....ok...so the dispersion block is the circular disc that the shower screen fits against......I'm not seeing any blockage...

I was just getting those two factors out of the way before proceeding. I didn't realize that your Oscar wasn't heating, and thought that perhaps a light had burned out.

If it's not heating, there could be a number of reasons for this, one of which is the main computer, but I hope that is not the case. I would first remove the top of the machine (remove top 6 screws including 2 next to water tank to do this) and look for the reset thermostat on the right side of the boiler (if you are facing front of machine). Attempt to press the red (or other color) button into the thermostat and try everything again. While open, just check to make sure no wires have come off of their connections. That really shouldn't ever happen, but you may as well check just to be sure.

Now if you are in fact hearing the pump turn on as you normally did when it was working properly for brewing, yet no water is coming out, this does make things a bit more complicated. It is possible that there is a blockage (or breakage) in the valve portion of the 3-way solenoid valve. If the pump is in fact turning on with no water coming out, then backflushing will not clean the valve. You will have to disassemble to inspect and possibly clean, or you may have to replace it. There could also be a problem with the coffee delivery switch not making contact and activating the solenoid to open the valve. For these reasons, if you are not comfortable disassembling these parts, then it is recommended that you take this to an authorized facility to be inspected.

How old is the machine? How long have you had it? What kind of water do you use in the plastic reservoir? There sensor that tells the Oscar that the reservoir is empty relies on minerals in the water. If your water is too pure it can cause the Oscar to think there is no water.

Thank-you for the responses. I tried re-setting the thermostat, but to no avail. I handed it over to my repair guy.....I just hope that I can afford the repair!
