Mitch: Tried that and of course it works fine, just need to clean the tray a bit and then wipe the cup bottom dry after the pull. Just seams less then satisfactory aesthetically or neurotically or something. Want a permanent solution, #49 on the list of things to do.

If you are really serious about this then I would lower the entire drip tray assembly. It would be a project but it could be made to look stock. Then again, as Dan said, I would just use a different mug, or you could pull the shot into a cup then transfer the coffee to your mug.
