Livia 90 gasket/portafilter issue

Postby tims on Fri Oct 28, 2011 11:01 pm

I changed the gasket in my Livia 90 like I always do about every 6 months or so, now the portafilter does not make a seal, doesn't seem to get tight enough now, I can *easily* tighten it all the way to the stop without much force.

possible the portafilter is too worn? it's the only thing i can think of.

channel was very clean as usual, gasket is new from Pasquini, tried 2 gaskets and same thing.

I'd want a bottomless portafilter if anyone knows where to find one for my machine. mine has been cut. It's also pretty old.

Are you sure you received the right gasket for your machine ? They make two diff kinds- one for the older machines and one for the newer ones.

I buy them from Pasquini, they never said anything about different gaskets, but a slightly thicker one would be nice. Will check with them this week, thanks

The last two gaskets I got seemed to be about 1-2mm too tall/thick to allow the portafilter to engage correctly. There was some buckling, and water/grounds were getting up behind the gasket, once I did muscle it into position. That was a big mess.

I used an exacto knife to plane off a millimeter or so off the back (side towards the group) side of the thing and that cleared up the problem.

Theoretically the serial number is what determines if your machine uses the thick or the thin gasket. 1st-line says s/n <27000 uses the thin gasket, and the thick one for numbers >27000.

It sounds like yours is too thin, but I am beginning to suspect that these things are not produced to the exacting tolerances that the machines actually require.

Good luck!

Mine is 44078. I'll check with Pasquini in the morning, they never said anything about different gaskets. I hope they have the thicker one.

thanks again!

For what it's worth, when I called Pasquini earlier today, they told me that there is a narrow range of sub 27 000 s/n machines that use the gasket that is primarily used on the post 27 000 s/n machines. I don't know remember the exact range, but it was something like: 24 221 to 24 263, within which my machine's s/n falls.

If you're 24 2xx, it's probably worth calling to make sure. OR, just take out the gasket and if it's a "squarish" loop, then you need the gasket for the >27 000 machines and if it's a round loop, then you need the one for the <27 000 machines. They are not even close to interchangeable.
