Little to no hot water from the espresso machine - Why?

Postby Ryebread119 on Fri Nov 18, 2011 5:03 pm

Hi everyone,

I recently acquired a used (~1 year old) Nuova Simonelli Appia. I had planned to practice drinks the whole afternoon. The first few went well, but I could tell that the steam wand was acting kind of funny after the 5th or 6th drink made. My shots began to diminish in quality, and then I couldn't get any hot water from the machine...all I received was steam. It wasn't until then that I thought to look at the pressure gauge. Resting, the pressure sat at about 7 bars, when I ran a shot, the pressure dropped drastically to just above 4 bars.

I was lucky in the past while working at a coffee shop - I always had someone who knew more than I did. But unfortunately for me, it meant I never learned how to troubleshoot a machine. Can anyone help? What's going on?

Auto-fill problems? It almost sounds like you've run the boiler dry.

How can I check to determine if that is the case? What kind of part would I need for that?

Is there a sight glass?
The sight glass shows the water level in the boiler.

Unfortunately, no. It's the 2 group head unit...no sight glass (at least not one that I can see easily). Is there another way (that is without having to take the machine apart)?

This machine should have a "2-position" power switch wherein position 1 turns everything on EXCEPT for the heating element and position 2 turns on the heating element. DO NOT engage position 2 until this problem is resolved.

It sounds as if the pump is not working for whatever reason. Are there any valves in the feed line to the machine that are, for some reason, closed?
