Lack of steam power on Rancilio Silvia all of a sudden

Postby rando nomad on Mon Apr 25, 2011 8:33 am

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I've been reading the site for a while and have gotten some great advice through reading the posts, but now I have a question I haven't seen a previous answer for.
I have a Silvia V2, bought it a bit over a year ago as a demo from 1st line.
I stay on top of descaling and the like- every 4-6 weeks, but in the last 5 days, the steam power has really dropped off. I pull the shots, switch the steam button on to get ready to do the milk. Then blast the wet steam out, steam milk. I am very good about purging the steam wand after steaming the milk as well as refilling the boiler right after steaming as well- all tips I got from this forum.
In the past few days, I have not gotten very much power out of the steam wand. I descaled on Friday, and yet over the weekend, very little change in power. My thought is that the thermostat is going, and that is causing the lack of heat/power. Any other suggestions/ideas?

Thanks

Before assuming the thermostat is failing, I would try the suggestions in Rancilio Silvia Running Out Of Steam!

Any other suggestions/ideas?

Remove the tip from the wand and inspect/clean (carefully) with a very small numbered drill bit.

+1
Probably some loose scale in the tip from the descaling.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've been using the start up routine recommended in the thread mentioned. I backflushed the machine as well as cleaned out the steam wand tip and that seemed to do the trick. Thanks very much.
