La Pavoni Lusso portafilter problem

Postby laura on Wed Jan 24, 2007 2:38 am

I'm new to this. I have a used Pavoni Lusso. Problem I'm having is that even with no coffee in the portafilter nothing (or only one side) comes out. Then after a couple seconds water starts to flow (overflow?) from the top portion. The water does get into the filter, I almost burned myself checking that. It just doesn't always go any further. I've checked for clogs and everything seems fine. Can anyone help?

Looks like worn gasket...Is the machine new or did it work well before? May be this site will help - http://www.pennineteaandcoffee.co.uk/train1.html Look for worn gasket on that page...
I have a La Pavoni si (which is practically identical to the Lusso) for 3 years but it always worked very well.

When the water overflows, do you have a basket in the portafilter? If so, the basket holes could be clogged. Does water flow through the portafilter when rinsing in the sink? That machine either uses pressurized baskets or a pressurized portafilter, so something must be clogged causing the excess pressure and improper flow. Let me find a diagram and check back. Later!

Water comes out fine if the portafilter is not on the machine. Comes out fine when just drawing hot water from the steamer(even with the portafilter in). When the portafilter is on even with no coffee in the filter water sometimes come out sometimes not. Seems to mostly only come out on one side. Then the water seems to overflow or something and comes out the top. The filter does not seem clogged when I take it apart, but seems like water only wants to come from one side.

Can you strip the portafilter down for cleaning or soak it in a cleaning solution? Another thing to look at is the shower screen on the brewhead. Is it clean? It should be removed every week or 2 for a good cleaning depending on use. Also wipe the dispersion screen that's under the shower screen. I'm still trying to find a parts diagram to see what type of portafilter and baskets it uses. If it's a pressurized portafilter, it could be a cleaning issue. Later!

I just looked up your machine and noticed it has a pressurized portafilter. If all is well with the shower screen I'd definitely look at the portafiler or basket not being clean. I've read that pressurized protafilters have a spring-loaded mechanism that only open when the pressure is high enough, so it could be defective or dirty. Give everything a good cleaning and see if it helps. Later!

Thanks for all your help. I figured out what the problem was(I'm stupid). When I stripped down the portafilter to clean it I noticed that one of the screws was stripped. When I replaced it I tightened all the screws down....too tight. So of course the pressure had no place to go because the spring was compressed.
Thanks
