La Pavoni Europiccola - Rebuild and Restore Project

Postby MRC on Wed May 18, 2011 10:39 am

Hello All,
I am new to the boards and have lurked a bit to find information on espresso machines, coffee, etc. Like everyone here, I love espresso. I currently own an ESE Pod machine (Spinel) and have recently been given a La Pavoni Europiccola that has been sitting in my parents basement for quite some time. I believe it is from 1980 (here is the exact wiring diagram from parts guru):

I would like some assistance, particularly with the wiring and heating element, since the machine does not heat up. I cleaned it up a bit, and need to get an multi meter in order to know for sure whether it is dead or not (thanks to the resources on here, i know how to test it).

One of my questions is, if the heating element is dead, can it be replaced with the newer 4 prong stainless steel element? I found some this on a few sites:
http://www.espressocare.com/Qstore/Qsto...nt+4+prong

However, my element has 2 wires coming down from the middle, and this one does not. So i don't know how the new SS element would be wired (or if it even can be). Any help/suggestions are appreciated!

Here is a pic of the wiring of my machine:

And the element after a bit of clean up:

Hello there Stefano here,

yes it can,
you will need to order also the shorter screws (3) since the old HE is quite a bit thicker,
since you will move to new style HE
the new thermostat is also needed and the o-ring style gasket (p-7ss)
some thermal grease for the thermostat is also recommended

obviously the HE looked toasted
the OLD style thermofuse (is tucked in the hole in the middle and it will just pull out) need to be removed and use the new re-settable one instead

Thank you for the reply Stefano!
Would I need to get a thermostat AND a thermofuse? I see that there is a safety thermostat and a safety thermofuse (2 different parts).
Thanks again!

Thanks a million! One more question for today :)
The 4 prong heating element does not require a pressurestat correct?
