That would be pretty hot water.. . . why would it not be possible to have that excess water dump back into the tank?

Yes, but what would that hurt?

Look at the bright side. By adding water to the reservoir daily and flushing some through the group, your brew water is always as fresh as possible. My Linea Mini has a rather small water reservoir, but I like adding fresh water daily or usually twice daily. Even when I have had machines with much larger reservoirs, I never filled them full just for that reason.

Good point.

OK, I agree, good point.Yes, but what would that hurt?
If you are pulling multiple shots in 5-10 minutes or a similar high frequency, the reservoir water temperature will increase likely above the pump's spec. If this was a shot every hour or so, I don't see a problem and your idea is valid.
This machine is certainly optimal when plumbed in & plumbed out but we all recognize that this is not a possible solution for everyone.

As usual, you are correct about a temp spec on the pump. It would be like plumbing in the machine into the hotwater tank in your home.

One of the reasons I decided to choose GS3 MP (and not Slayer or Synesso) was its water reservoir. Now, I use from 1/2 to 1 gallons a day, which is $15 extra per month. Not that I regret, but I wish it would be written somewhere and I've read it before.
Also, the line "add water" appeared already a few times in the middle of the shot. The machine stops and the shot is ruined. I am not quite sure why is that. I read that GS3 has a huge boiler, so an empty reservoir should not be the reason to interrupt the shot. Flaw in design?

This must be new. On my machine the "Refill Tank" only comes on AFTER you pull your shot, so it never stops during a pull, thus never ruining a shot. Very weird that they would change this given the boiler's 1.5 liter capacity.DaumierS wrote:Also, the line "add water" appeared already a few times in the middle of the shot. FWIW, my firmware version is 1.06

How exactly would you expect the shot to continue flowing if there is no water left in the reservoir? Hot water never passes through the pump, the water that exits your grouphead does so because cold water from the reservoir (or inlet if plumbed in) is forced into the boiler at the other end. Pretty much every pump espresso machine ever is designed this way.DaumierS wrote:Also, the line "add water" appeared already a few times in the middle of the shot. Now if you get the "add water" error prematurely when there is still plenty left in the reservoir, that would of course be an entirely different issue...

Now that they are possibly discarding 10 shots or maybe more worth of water for one shot pulled, they might not want to assume there is enough water in the tank to make one more shot when the sensor triggers.uscfroadie wrote:This must be new.
