Indeed, I'd guess poor water is the cause of a huge proportion of machine problems, GS3 or otherwise. An investment in good water treatment (or thanking your stars if the water comes out of your tap soft and delicious) is an investment in longer, more trouble-free operation of your espresso machine—not to even mention an investment in being able to produce coffee that tastes up to the standard of your investment! If you've got awesome water where you are and you're thinking of the GS3, I'd hazard a guess that a lot of these check-valve/solenoid-sticking type problems are highly unlikely for you. But I can't make any promises. And if you're happy with your machine, why replace it?

Want something with more control over the shot (paddle version). Considering also the Speedster and Cyncra. Partly just unprovoked upgradeitis and some spare cash burning a hole in my pocket. As to the water I'd put a basic filter on for a new machine just for prevention of any "old pipe crud" that might get to it. There were a couple of broken pipes in the street (8-10" mains) over the years that when repaired kicked up some particles.
