La Marzocco GS/3 MP on the way!

Postby Derekb on Mon Jan 02, 2012 6:00 pm

My first post here. I think I am off to a good start?
I was surprised that there is not much recent posting about my new-to-me machine, the La Marzocco GS/3 paddle version. Has the buzz died down, are not many people using this machine now?
I think I am ready to hook it up when it arrives Friday. I have an Expobar Athena that is plumbed in to an Everpure H-1200 filter with new cartridges.
I took the day off from work to help the UPS guy carry in my 110 lb. baby and have the time to hook it all up.

You are surprised that there isn't a lot of talk about a $6,500 espresso machine...?

While there is a bit of space between this and the very tip of the pointy end of the home machine range, the apex can be seen from where you are. But, seriously, a search in this website for "La Marzocco GS/3" shows over 440 hits.

I have a Mazzer Mini, at this point about 6 years old. Hmm, maybe time to replace the burrs?
I have been reading as much as I can find on this board about my new machine, and, yes have found plenty. I was just surprised that there was a lot of posting about the GS/3 in 2009, not a lot recently.

I would suggest a high-end conical grinder to go with that machine. One of the best home espresso machines available deserves to be fed by better than the very least expensive Mazzer has to offer.

Plenty of posts on the GS3... unless there's a new updated version of it.

The new Nuova Simonelli Aurelia II T3 on the other hand, I'm surprised nobody's talking about it... then again, it's not even available yet, and I doubt there are many cafe owners here who could potentially purchase one. But the technology is considered unparalleled at this point...

I'm on my iPad at the moment so can't post the link, but look at the FAQ section and read the Titan Grinder Project. You will be amazed at what a good grinder can add to your quality. In fact, we love to look at big shiny new machines like your awesome GS3 but the grinder is more important to the taste. I can make a mediocre machine pull good shots with my grinder but would have a much harder time pulling good shots from a mediocre grinder mated to my (or your) machine.

You may notice a bigger change in your shots with a grinder upgrade. The Mini is nothing to sneeze at, it was the gold standard for many years but there are other options available now.

The Titan Grinder Project. There you will find this image in the article:

When the project was over I bought that very grinder (young man not included). While one of that magnitude is not necessary (the grinder, not the boy) it made a huge difference in my espresso and continues to do so.

Good luck!!! I have a two week old GS3, and I love it. I have had to practice a bit, coming from a Vivaldi, and a Rocket.
