La Marzocco GS/3 Drip Tray issue

Postby JonR10 on Fri Mar 05, 2010 8:16 am

Hi All,
Over at Coffeegeek, Mark Prince posted about having communicated with LaMarzocco USA. He indicates that LaMarz USA has no knowledge of drip tray issues with the GS/3 (sounds crazy to me...)

Here is the CG post: Click This
Hey GS/3 owners; I've been communicating with LM USA about the machine and an article I'm working on, and according to them, there have been no complaints or discussions by GS/3 owners (both paddle group and automatic models) about the drip tray - specifically how water pools on the tray's metal ribs to an excessive amount and fails to properly drain.

I sent LM a raw video of the pooling in action, and have other videos I'm cutting together into a montage to show the tray's problems with both hot water wand and grouphead water.

If you are unsatisfied with the quality, build, design, etc of the drip tray, PLEASE communicate this directly to La Marzocco USA (I've been emailing Joe, but John Blackwell or Roger Wittmann might be good choices - email addresses at link).

Only through letting the company know will we see improvements in this tray and a possible replacement down the road.

Mark
PS - don't let them tell u you were the first to complain about this. Apparently I was! :) :)

I'm with Mark - let's start a letter writing campaign to see if we can get a new drip tray design. I would be willing to pay for a replacement if they had one....so let's see if they'll respond!

Thanks,
Jon

Similar complaints had been going on in Germany in this thread. Below is a translation of the latest post by Paul Elmar (LM distributor in Brazil) who had an earlier prototype.

"Its looks like there will be a new driptray, similar to the one on the GB5/FB80. This version I have not tested personally. It sounds like there will be a definite solution in the next few weeks which will also be used for regular production. I don't have an exact date.

A few other minor changes were made such as tabs under the driptray [already on Mark's Paddle] a new frame construction for less vibrations, a non no-burn wand for super dry steam [burn-me wand?] with a 4-hole tip and steel brackets [already out] and new gicleurs.

Except the new frame everything is upgradeable ( to change the frame the machine has to be completely diassembled and reassembled which can be fun if you have some time on the weekend)."

I crossposted this on CG here

I could have sworn I complained to John about this awhile back, but it could easily have been Chris I asked about the mesh cover. Either way, just shot John an e.mail with some thoughts, so hopefully we'll hear back.

I've considered getting a piece of stainless and trying to create a drip tray on my own. Certainly wouldn't look as good, but would help me from going mad from the current cover. :|
