La Marzocco Find...What have I gotten into!

Postby ccfore on Tue Jan 13, 2009 12:41 am

In doing a little searching on CL this afternoon I came across an ad for a "La Marzocco Linea Cappuccino & Espresso Maker+ Mazzer Espresso Grinder" he also had a couple of pictures. It had been listed only about a hour earlier so I left a message. He called me back and stated that this was left in one of his rental properties that had been sold and he was clearing out stuff before the sale. Only problem with this was it was just getting into rush hour with a big snowstorm to boot and it was 40 minutes from me. Well you guessed it, I made the trek (35 minute ride turned into a 2 1/2 hour ride due to the snow/rush hour) because I knew it would be gone quickly. So now I'm the proud? owner of a La Marzocco Linea 2-group Auto espresso machine.

The seller stated he didn't know if it worked or not but everything else that had been left behind worked so he thought this would as well. Oh yes, did I forget to mention he was throwing in 2 grinders with the deal as well. Just my luck they turn out to be a RIO rebadged Mazzer SJ and a Mazzer Mini! Image

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it at this point as far as a refurb but the internals look to be in pretty good shape. Image

It will definitely need a good cleaning as well. It won't be making a home in my kitchen, thats for sure as the Elektra T1 was pushing it with the S.O. Any ideas as far as getting it up and running? I'll have to figure out a plug to use as its pretty big looks like 220v-240v?, 3 phase plug along with an additional cut-off wire as well. Image
The plate shows a 1998 manufacture date so its not ancient.

The body is is in remarkable shape with no dents or dings that I can see, with maybe a little bend in the drip tray that can be easily remedied. The steam boiler site glass on the right side just above the drip tray looks to be intact, and the knobs are kind of rigged as well. As far as the Linea goes, I 'm not really sure at this point what kind of time /money or effort I should put into it. I'll probably hook it up to check if the autodoser electronics work which would be the main thing right now as well as making sure the boilers are both operational. I'll post additional pics when I start to take it apart some more. I guess the moral of the story is you can't expect perfection for the price of a new Baratza Virtuoso!

It snows in Minnesota? Dang. I have sold LMs once in a while as a distriubutor. Not many. I own a 4gr, 2gr, and a GS1. One of the hallmarks of almost all precision, quality machines is that they are easy to work on. Things fit correctly and the engineering is logical. You have a real prize. The LM Linea you have is a great platform to put a PID on, of course. I can see by the photos you will need to replace the gauge as it is showing pressures while cold. Have fun. You a lucky guy.

For $200, I am not sure I'd complain about a missing pump and motor, although that will cost you a good bit to replace...

You got $700 dollars worth of grinders (could get this on eBay pretty easily) for $200, with a LM thrown in for free!

Another question is who in their right mind left that stuff behind?! Must have been leaving in a hurry and didn't have room for it.
