Izzo Duetto Owners - which basket?

Postby benm5678 on Mon Dec 06, 2010 9:41 pm

Sorry if this was discussed already, couldn't quite find...

I'm using the double basket that came with Duetto... i was wondering if there's something preferred that people found to work with it?

I like the straight edges i saw the LM double has... maybe that's something i'll try - surprised i can only find it for sale at wholelattelove.

Thanks.

I use the double that came with the machine and the LM triple that came with my bottomless PF that I got from Chris. Haven't had any issues with either.

The straight sided double LM basket takes a 57mm tamper.

Depends a lot on the coffee. But after swapping around several different ones, i've consistently found the LM double to be my fav. It's a little trickier to work with the the flavor blows the other ones away IMO. The only problem with that basket is that you can't downdose with it due to the ridge, and yes, it won't accept a standard 58mm base. You'll need a 57.5.

I have one of those... i don't have as much luck with it, i think since it's a little bigger than my other and no ridge makes it easy for me to screw up the tamp. Also it's shaped kinda like the stock basket -- i'm curious if the straight edge on LM can make some difference, so i guess i'll try it... good to know it's 57mm... i actually have a flat tamper that size.

thanks for the tips :)

I've used both the double basket that came with the Duetto and the deeper basket with straight sides that comes with a bottomless PF. Both are 58mm and the bottomless PF holds a bit more. My preference leans toward the basket that came with the Duetto. I think the angled sides make the tamp less error prone and I haven't noticed a difference in taste using the same amount of coffee in either basket. It's also very easy to get the puck out.

That said it's always fun to experiment with different accessories and trying a different PF/basket combination for yourself seems like the best way to go...

Chris' Coffee has the bottomless PF with a basket that fits the double PF that comes with the Duetto, so you can play with basket design and a bottomless PF as well.

I definitely preferred the Ridgeless Synesso baskets when I had my E-61. Both the 14gr and 18gr, IIRC. There is also a much bigger one I believe, 21grams.. but I didnt use that one.

The 14gram one worked great for doses above 16grams. I usually topped that basket out at 19grams. The 18gram basket held a few more grams, I usually only used it for doses in the 20-22gram range. If for some reason I felt like dosing in the 24-25gram range, which I personally think is a bit much, Id use the La Marzocco Triple, which is the one Chris sends with the bottomless portafilters.

My two most used baskets were the Synesso 14gram, and the standard faema 14gram. The synesso was used much more, almost all the time. The Faema 14gram was for using doses in 15-16gram range, as that was a little light for the synesso.

The Ridgeless baskets sold by Great Infusions and EspressoParts, sometimes called "La Marzocco Ridgeless" are quite similar to the ones you get direct from Synesso.
