I've had my Silvia for about 6 months now and I think I've got the hang of the thing -- but I just noticed that other day that when the machine is hot, some steam leaks out from the group head when I'm using the steam wand and no portafilter is attached. Is this normal? I haven't used the machine that much so I certainly hope there isn't something wrong with it.

No, that's not normal. It sounds like the pressure release solenoid is sticking. Have you been backflushing regularly?

If backflushing doesn't fully solve the problem, then you may have to remove the 3-way valve to clean it out. It is not uncommon for a small piece of brass or other debris left over from manufacture to work its way into the valve.

Thanks Jim for the reminder. See Fixing a Leaky Solenoid on a Rancilio Silvia for pictures.

Thanks guys! I was under the impression that backfiushing was just a very-occasional thing and I haven't yet done it. Newbie mistake I guess. I'll pick up some supplies and do that right away.

Thanks again.
