Is my water filter set up overkill?

I decided over 6 months to empty my bank account and buy the Quickmill Vetrano. Since it is a plumb only model, I had my water filter set up a month before receiving my machine.
Now a year later I am wondering if it is too much overkill. I have recently added one more piece, so I am now running a 7 stage filter system!

1st - 1.5M SEDIMENTARY
2nd - GAC CARBON
3rd - 1.5M CARBON BLOCK
4th - RO membrane
5th - DI resin (recently re-installed)
6th - Omnipure SCL10G6 Chlorine Taste Odor Scale Reducer (new)
7th - N0. 1 GAC for final taste

On my TDS meter, I am cruising around 25 ppm.


I took the top bolt off the E61 and there was NO calcium build up, some chrome coming off though.
I live in a city where the water is pretty hard and I want to keep my Vetrano for many many many years too come. I am 100% happy with my purchase and have no desire to get anything else.


Please give me your recommendations and any advise,

While I can't speak to whether it's overkill or not (the chlorine filter and GAC after the DI don't seem to make a lot of sense, but what do I know), your coffee will taste better and you won't strip the chrome if you put an inline calcite between that setup and the machine. I used the OmniPure K5648 available here or from Good Water Warehouse. You'll get maybe a slight scale buildup at the waterline in your boiler, enough that you might want to do a light descale every few years, but no more than that. It's a good compromise. Tastes better to drink too, or for making tea.

Hi Scott, I'd recommend rearranging it something like this.

Filter for sediment
Scale Reducer to soften
Carbons for chlorine
Filter for carbon fines
RO
David's calcite filter (I have no experience with this, but if you have boiler level probes they might not work without)
Vetrano


I would not want to have the DI tanks anywhere near my machine, it'll be too hard on the metal.

What kind of RO do you have?

which is Jim Shulman's nicely researched FAQ on water. Congrats on having the right idea about treating the "problem" now rather than later.

Not knowing your complete system (a sketch would be nice), I would be interested in where you placed the pressure regulator for Mr. V and what pressure are you reading static and when flushing, and when brewing.

What is the TDS before the system? What is the water hardness before & after?

There's some real experts on water that read these types of posts (I'm most definitely not one of them) and it would be helpful (maybe) if you gave make & model of the equipments in your system.

This is serious overkill. You're cruising near distilled water territory and compromising brew quality. Good water treatment does not eliminate descaling, just make it less frequent.
