That must have been one heck of a nylon mesh. Chrome is hard, which is why they line the barrels of automatic rifles with it. You did not use something like a green 3M scrubby did you? There must have been some kind of grit on the pad, or the cleaner you used has some grit in it. The only way to really remove swirl marks is to remove material, sand/buff but that can leave you with a big problem. Just use some MAAS metal polish on it to minimize the appearance of the scratches.

Look for some "chrome & glass polish" at your neighborhood hardware store. This type of polish is going to be much safer than your typical silver/brass/aluminum polishes.
