How do I remove noisy OPV from Quickmill Anita?

Postby rferoni on Sat Mar 06, 2010 10:17 am

I want to remove the OPV from Anita and see if it's scaled at all. I've been getting that high squealing sound. Annoying at 4:30am when everyone is asleep. I did adjust the OPV awhile back and I know some have just adjusted it a few times and the squealing sound went away. Looks easy enough to remove and inspect though so I figure I'll just do that. Just want to make sure I take care and not mess anything up as I don't know if there are any internal parts I can mess up while taking out.

It looks like all I have to do is disconnect the tube and undo the nut above the OPV.

FWIW I just de-scaled Anita and sound did not go away. Also used the search function but found nothing on actual how-to for removing OPV.

Thanks,
Ron

Hello Ron you are correct, removing (at least partially) the OPV is as you describe. As long as you have it apart it may be a good time to replace the rubber OPV seat. It may or may not help with the squeal. Unsure if scale has any effect either. Nonetheless take it apart and have a look.

I think descaleing procedure might make a difference too - maybe this applies to your situation.

If you run descale solution through the OPV with no backpressure from the grouphead, you don't flush the valve seat completely.

I noticed an OPV squeal from my HX machine appear toward the end of my last descale interval. For my next descale, I included using a blank in my portafilter and running solution with it in place, forcing solution through the open OPV. The noise went away and hasn't returned.

Ron -

Order a replacement valve (the small rubber & brass), an additional spare rubber insert, o-ring, & food grade lubricant from Chris' Coffee. Always apply a counter-hold to the valve connections - that little 1/8" tee CAN BE fragile.

The squeal can result from scale buildup and/or a dramatic change in shape of the rubber valve face from contact with the seat. These valves have very little movement (~0.10") and water spray patterns initiate vibrations.

edit - a little better pic and more explanation.
