Help with Expobar Brewtus II Repair

Postby Emerson11 on Mon Dec 26, 2011 9:41 pm

Excess pressure release valve opens when the pump turns on or when it is expressing coffee. It cannot maintain its temperature. The front tank does not seem to fill completely. HELP! Know anyone who about servicing these, know where to get parts and diagnosis issues. My husband is a great dyi person but this is stumping him.

I do not know the Expobar Brewtus, but most double boiler machines have two pressure valves. One is the safety valve mounted on the steam boiler. If this one opens you would know it from a violent release of steam and/or hot water which might spray all over the inside of the machine. This would be caused by over pressure (and over temperature) from a faulty pressurestat or from a water level fault causing the boiler to overfill. The other is referred to as the pressure relief valve that regulates the brew pressure at the group when making espresso. It only allows a set maximum pressure to reaching the coffee. if this malfunctions or needs adjusting it can result in too high of a brew pressure or too low. This would bee seen as an excessive flow rate of the extraction, or at the other extreme, no flow at all.

Now, if your machine is PID equipped (red digital display on the front) the brew temperature is electronically controlled.

So, does the machine have good steaming power?
Does it dispense hot water properly?
Is the problem only brew-boiler related?
What does the excess water come out of? (excuse my dangle)
How long has it been in use?
When was the last time it was thoroughly descaled?
What water do you use in it?
How is the water "processed" (softened, filtered, etc.)?

It is very hard to diagnose the problem with the information supplied.

It would be best to have conversation when you are in front of the machine.

Can you e mail me and I'll send you my contact info and then set up a time run the machine and do test or two while on the phone.

Thanks

That's a "for sure".

In the meantime, go here: http://www.home-barista.com/downloads/ and download the Brewtus documents. It seems as though the boiler fill solenoid valve for the steam boiler is leaking OR, (hopefully not) the hx which runs through the steam boiler and supplies preheated water to the brew boiler has developed an internal leak.

If it were a heat exchanger machine I would say you have a cracked heat exchanger or the boiler fill solenoid is partially stuck open. The Brewtus does have a pre heat heat exchanger so you could have a crack in it and you are popping the steam boiler pressure release valve. Best bet is to call Todd.
