Grouphead off level

Postby mitch236 on Fri Sep 24, 2010 8:55 am

I've been fighting with my extractions because it seemed that the funnel of coffee was always towards the rear of the basket no matter how I tried to compensate. Then I decided to really look closely at the grouphead and I noticed it is canted with the front portion higher than the rear. That explains why the funnel would be towards the rear of the basket. I have two questions. First, does it matter? Second, if it does matter (and knowing my OCD traits, it will), how can I fix it? I would think I would need to rotate the brew boiler as I have the welded on group Linea.

Here's some pictures, it is hard to see but if you look closely you can see what I am referring to.

Hi Mitch,

My machine is the same a bit off level but the machine itself is level, just the group or what I thought/think it was - the portafilter once inserted looks like this from the front looking down the handle at it:

slightly tilted left higher than right.

I thought the head and group were but during restoration all was good.

No idea.

hope it gets better.

It only matters if you are concerned about video production values. It surely doesn't affect the taste of the espresso. If the grouphead is not level (or the countertop is not level), most legs on espresso machines are adjustable.

A slightly off kilter group head will not cause an uneven extraction. I am sure that at some point it would cause problems but that minor of an angle, it is not the cause of your uneven extractions. Look to the handle side of the portafilter. Most likely uneven distribution of an off tamp. I use to fight with the same issue but eventually tuned my technique and the problem went away

Tonight I decided that I had to fix it and ended up adjusting the straps that hold the brew boiler to the steam boiler and got the group head almost perfect. The very first shot I pulled had the cone right where it belongs.

I had major technique issues when I first joined this forum but with an endless pursuit for competency, and some great advice (mostly from Jim's posts), I was able to improve my technique to the point where I can pull consistently good shots. I say Jim's posts but the main tidbit was to lower my dose to 14gm which made my extractions much easier to control. The other piece of advice was to upgrade my grinder from AndyS.
