Scotchio, given your location I would certainly suggest descaling at this point. You may or may not have other steaming issues, but as a recipient of Thames River water, I can tell you our water is HARD and scale buildup is a certainty sooner rather than later.

Your mileage may vary depending on what kind of filtering you're doing, but I would in any case suggest descaling as a prophylactic measure if nothing else. (For what it's worth I use exclusively Brita filtered water in my Gaggia Classic and while the Brita filtering is probably not unhelpful, by itself it is not sufficient to make scale buildup an ignorable problem.)

Also for what it's worth I have replaced the Gaggia stock wand with a Rancilio steam wand and am now enjoying far better steaming results than I did previously. The modification is pretty simple and requires only a couple pairs of pliers and some fine sandpaper.
