Gaggia Baby Class - no water at brewhead?

Postby pouch on Tue Mar 03, 2009 6:09 am

Hi, I am new to the forum, I love my coffee & have had my Gaggia Baby Class for about 1.5yrs.
This is the second machine, the first failed after about 2 months.

For some reason the water does not come through the brewhead? When I switch on it takes about 30sec, and then slowly I see dribbles coming through 1 drop at a time. I have removed the shower screen and the water is coming through each of the holes, just in tiny quantities.

I use this every day, so last had a cup last night?

Steam wand works fine.

Any suggestions?

I have searched the forum and read about backflushing (but have never done this) the only cleaning is regular cleaning of the showerhead & coffee holder...

First i'll assume the pump is working.
The water from the pump to the coffee goes past the opv, into the boiler, past the three-way valve and then into the group.
The three-way valve is a handy little gizmo to release the residual pressure above the coffee so if you release the portafilter, nothing gets sprayed with coffee and hot water. But, by releasing the pressure, some coffee and grounds go up, through the showerscreen, the group and the three way valve out in the driptray.
So, if you don't clean those areas, they can get very dirty indeed. Those areas are cleaned by backflushing. You haven't backflushed in 1.5 years. If one assumes 3 shots a day, that amounts to 1642 times a little bit of coffee. Without cleaning. So I think your grouphead and your three way valve are clogged up.
Time to take out the screwdrivers, the detergents and some old toothbrushes!

I know little of Gaggias, but It could be the same problem as reported yesterday. The members of the Gaggia Users Group would know for certain.

Thanks for the reply,

I have taken off the shower filter and also the main head and rubber. They were very dirty, it has not solved anything, so I guess I need to find the 3 way valve.

Are there any web links showing how to remove the cover, or which area I need to head for?

I can't find anything for dissembling a Gaggia Baby Class.

Solved ALMOST

I cleaned a lot, in the end I detached the top of the boiler and found that there was a lot of loose limescale..

All is working now, but I have a leak at the base of the boiler, the seal looked fine, is there a special way to seal this?

Hi pouch

I noticed you were looking for advice on removing the top-cover from your 'Baby...which you presumably got from your next post(?) I am having a similar problem to you with no water flowing through the showerhead of my 1 yr old Baby Ivory - however, I can't see how to remove the top cover! I've removed all (obvious) screws from the plastic casing plus the showerhead, 2 hex nuts and disk and rubber ring from inside the grouphead plus the 4 screws around it. Now, when I try to lift the top cover off, I can only lift it a couple of mm as there is still something holding on to it and I am reluctant to pull it harder, lest I break anything.

So, any advice would be useful.
