I'm wondering if regularly measuring flow rate (volume/time) from the group head is useful as an indicator for scale buildup. I know that checking the mushroom is the most direct way to check an E61, but maybe that's only necessary if you see a reduction in flow rate.

Related questions: Does the type of group (e.g., E61) or other design aspects impact whether flow rate is a meaningful indicator? What determines the expected flow rate for a given machine, just the pump or is there more to it? Is there a standard flow rate for espresso machines?
